The Agatelady Rock Shop opened in 2023 to replace the Gitche Gumee Agate and History Museum that operated since 1999. The new facility is located two miles away from the museum.
Although the new rock shop does not have an associated museum, it does have some fabulousnot-for-sale specimens on display. Items for sale in the rock shop include Lake Superior agates, agates from different geographic locations, other rocks and minerals (including specimens that were on display at the museum), hand-crafted agate windows and lamps made by the rock shop owner, and books self-published by the owner that can also be purchased on this website (both retail and wholesale). Regular lectures will take place each Friday during the summer season at 6pm. The regular lectures are $20 per person (limited to 10 people per lecture). The Friday lecture is Understanding and Finding Agates. This lecture as well as several others can be set up on a custom basis by clicking on the BOOK icon next to the desired custom lecture on the HOME page. The rock shop is open with limited semi-retirement hours: June, July, August, and September; Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays; 2:00-5:00pm. However, other days/times can be set up as a private appointment (minimum purchase required). You can book an appointment on the HOME page during the regular summer season. For a winter appointment, please call or text Karen at 906-450-5033 (minimum purchase requirement of $50 per group).
This new www.agateladyrockshop.com webpage will now be the active site replacing the original museum's www.agatelady.com webpage. The focus of this new webpage is to facilitate people signing up for private appointments, lectures, and classes as well as for purchasing books self-published by the rock shop owner, Karen Brzys.
The original webpage will remain on the internet. No additional updates will be made to the agatelady.com site, but the archive will be preserved with thousands of photos and stories. The information in the archive on the original webpage includes: agate basics, customer agate finds, Grand Marais scenes, history's gems, and more. The online gift shop on the museum's website will no longer be active since it is being replaced on this new website. However, additional photos of the pages in my books are displayed.
Thanks to everyone over the last 24 years for supporting the Gitche Gumee Agate and History Museum.
The Agatelady Rock Shop opened with regular hours on June 1, 2023. The semi-retirement regular season hours are: June, July, August, September; Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays; 2:00-5:00pm. There are no minimum purchase requirements for regular season hours. Private appointments for other dates and times in 2024 (May through October) can be scheduled on this website's HOME page beginning in January. To access the appointment, lecture, and class options, click on the Appointment icon at either the top and bottom of this page and scroll down the HOME page. There are minimum purchase requirements for private appointments that must be paid in advance. The minimum purchase requirement is per group (not per individual customer) and will be a credit toward purchases made by the group in the rock shop. There are also fees for the lectures and classes that do not grant credits toward purchases. We look forward to the Agatelady Rock Shop continuing in the legacy of the Gitche Gumee Museum!
The Agatelady Rock Shop is located at E21401 Newberg Road, Grand Marais, MI 49839 — which is two miles from the museum and downtown. Please see the map on the home page.
